Knight and Day is the best Tom Cruise comedy performance ever. And yes, I said COMEDY. He effortlessly moves from his ultra-serious persona to this gem of a movie. Watch Knight and Day online free to see this sure fire hit.
When I first saw the Knight and Day trailers I thought this was going to suck big time. Man was I wrong. With the exception of a rather slow 30 minutes in the middle, this movie speeds along with outstanding CGI, action, locations and especially the dialog if you can catch it all.
Cameron Diaz plays June Havens, a single white female who lives a pretty ordinary life, until a secret agent suddenly drops into it. Tom Cruise plays Roy Miller, the mysterious man of intrigue that blows into June's life.
Tom's Roy is charming, soft spoken and very sure of himself. He's apparently also half psychotic. When he and June first meet he treats her very gently, never giving her cause for alarm. He knows that he's about to turn her life totally upside down, so he tries to be as decent as possible.

Then all hell breaks loose. People June has never seen before suddenly start popping up trying to kill the two of them. She is completely confused by what is going on as Roy pulls her out of one life-threatening situation and into another. As the spys chase each other the carnage and collateral damage intensifies. But throughout the chaos Roy keeps on assuring June not to worry, that he knows what he's doing and has everything under control.
June finally learns that Roy's mission is to protect the inventor of a new life-time battery from people who are trying to kidnap him. At the same time he must keep the battery itself from falling into the wrong hands.
In most "James Bond" type movies, the story revolves around the spy or Government agent. But this is different in that the "innocent bystander" is the focus of the movie. We see things from June's perspective. This means Cameron Diaz performance is essential to this movie. She's perfect. Just watch her expressions and movements as she slowly transforms from a confused, horrified innocent to an assured "assistant". She's spot on.
Tom Cruise is just hilarious here, partly because we just don't see him in this type of light-hearted role very often (not since his early days such as Risky Business). No matter what type of mayhem is going on around them or the impossible odds they are facing, he keeps his composure and continues to deliver assurances that there is nothing to worry about .. he has it handled. June's incredulous glances are hilarious.
The movie does a great job of mixing action, danger and comedy simultaneously. In one example Roy and June are traveling on a partially filled airplane when June excuses herself to use the ladies room. As soon as she's locked in all the other passengers AND the two pilots attack Roy, trying to kill him. They are all enemy agents. As a thrilling fight to the death ensues, June is totally oblivious to the death struggle going on outside her bathroom door. Her only reaction to the sound of bodies being slammed against the door is to reply "occupied".
Funny.
The writers of this movie obviously know their Hitchcock. One of that great director's favorite themes was the ordinary individual suddenly thrust into dangerous circumstances beyond their control. Hitchcock's "The Thirty Nine Steps" is one example, but that was deadly serious. Knight and Day is more like the masterpiece North by Northwest in that there are a lot of comedic moments. Carry Grant was the innocent bystander in that movie, and Cameron Diaz does a similar great job here.
Knight and Day will probably be one of the most fun times you'll have at the movies this summer.
