Visit Fahraj Friday Mosque During Your Trip to Iran

Fahraj Friday Mosque is located 30 kilometers away from Yazd and is the place where the local people of Fahraj get together to offer their prayers. The architecture of this building belongs to a particular style which depicts the evolution of mosque construction over the ages. It is an extent mosque which has graduated to the use of piers over columns in the building structure.

Although the exact period cannot be identified during which the mosque was built, yet researchers have placed its date of construction during the ninth century. The mosques in the beginning were constructed with post and lintel systems, which then changed to wooden roof on arcades. This was followed by vaulting with permanent materials. Iranians had such system at the time of Sassanids era, the last dynasty that resisted against Muslims who brought Islam to Iran.

The Time of Construction

Many Zoroastrian references have been found in Fahraj Friday Mosque which suggests that the building was constructed during the rule of the Sassanids. The town was also a prominent place during the Sassanid times being located between Yazd and Baqf. You will also find records of Iranshahr in Baluchistan being known under the name of Fahraj, during your trip to Iran. This has been mentioned in the records found when Alexander invaded Iran.

What It Looks Like

Like most other mosques, Fahraj Friday Mosque also has a vaulted sanctuary, clay minaret, internal courtyard and arcades. The materials used in making the structure are mainly mud bricks and unfired, sun-dried clay tiles. Tiles line the courtyard which also has an ablution tank in the middle. The jamaat khana or the main prayer hall is covered with barrel vaults on the top which are typical of the mosques you will find during your trip to Iran. Brick piers lie underneath the vaults. There are vaults again in the roofs too.

The Minaret

The minaret of Fahraj Friday Mosque was built in the 10th century which is extant today like the mosque itself. It is shaped like a cylinder which tapers at the top. There is a spiral staircase leading to the top with many slits in the structure. This minaret is one of the first of its kind in Iran and this type of cylindrical construction was later adopted in other countries like Iraq, Syria, India and Afghanistan.
