Understand The Myths About Fertility Treatment
One of the most common fallacies about fertility treatments is that "infertility
is a woman's problem." In fact, only 30% of all infertility difficulties are attributed solely to the woman, usually the result of blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, ovulation disorders, uterine fibroids, congenital anomalies or disease. In 30% of cases, the explanations for infertility are due to male issues such as azoospermia (no sperm production), oligospermia (not many sperm are manufactured), abnormal sperm cells, retrograde ejaculation, enlarged scrotum veins or genetic abnormalities. The remaining 40% results from a combination of male and female issues. This article covers several myths surrounding infertility.
One common misconception about treatments for infertility is that medical professionals are working to create "designer babies." From a scientific standpoint, reports that we will someday be able to pick and choose our baby's traits are untrue. Embryo screening was established to test for health conditions, but many doctors are hesitant to use it because complications include contamination, misdiagnosis and risk to the embryo. Even though an infertility specialist may find a way to choose a certain embryo which will go on to develop, they can't just tinker around and choose their favorite genes or influence how these genes reproduce and get expressed.
Another misconception is that in vitro fertility treatments are uncomplicated. "The media tends to report the success cases," says Debora Spar, author of a book called "The Baby Business," but failures are not unusual. The American Fertility Association reports that the efficacy of any infertility procedure decreases considerably after age 32 and a woman in her early forties only has a 5% chance of achieving a healthy pregnancy through IVF. For this reason, the infertility specialist may put in up to eight embryos in hopes that one will work out. Although it is only legal to implant two embryos in the United Kingdom, there are currently no such regulations in the United States, says Bonnie Steinbock.
Another piece of misinformation is that home remedies are an effective alternative to fertility treatments. Rumors on how to "increase the odds of pregnancy" run the gamut from taking two aspirin per day and taking Robitussin cough medicine, to de-stressing and avoiding sugar substitutes. Yet none of these methods have been confirmed to be effective. On the other hand, a visit to an infertility clinic will help as many as 80% of all couples wanting to conceive, although not usually overnight. There might need to be a few approaches and several trials to attain success.
Another fallacy is that most fertility treatments consist of sophisticated petri dish fertilization, frozen embryos and assisted reproductive technology. Yet 85-90% of infertility problems are treated with conventional therapies like drug treatment or surgical repair of reproductive organs. Most couples have problems like: ovulation disorders, poly-cystic ovary syndrome, uterine fibroids, medication side effects, erectile dysfunction, enlarged scrotum veins, hormone deficiencies and illness. Only in cases where women have obstructed or damaged fallopian tubes or men have low sperm counts will the infertility specialist propose in vitro fertilization, which accounts for less than 5% of all infertility treatments in the U.S.
