Parasitic Insects: Problems and Treatment

Parasites, such as fleas, always need to be given a priority by dog owners

. Common problems that fleas can cause include allergic reactions to their bites, this is the cause of a lot of worry by pet owners, the affected area will become hairless and very irritable; hence the animal will start scratching.

Fleas will also cause severe dermatitis in dogs, which basically is inflammation of the skin (or rash to most people), with severe feal infestations. You can treat and prevent infestations of external parasites such as fleas or ticks with a medicated collar.

Ticks and lice are other forms of external parasitic insects, as well as internal ones such as hook worms, round worms, whip worms, etc. These will all cause affections to the health of the animal. For example, most of the time when a hookworm affects an animal, it will suffer from anemia. Of course the signs become more prominent with a higher degree of affection by the hookworm.

The laervae of hookworms can pass directly through the skin and cause huge problems in the affected ones. Such dogs may reveal lesions pertaining to the dermatitis in the feet region and skin areas. Rashes may be seen more frequently in such cases and the affected animal will pass loose stool, which is red tinged and mioxed with blood material.

If round worms are seen in big numbers then the affected puppies will have a potbelly condition which is generally more easily recognizable by the owners themselves. This can be treated by taking piperazin salts orally, however broad-spectrum anthelmintics like pyrantel pamoate and fenbendazole are also given to treat these conditions.

Many medicinal drugs have come into the market of treating fleas and other parasitic insects. Ivermectin is highly preferred by many dog owners in the treatment of parasites in dogs. This drug is available in the forms of injections, oral forms and even as an external application too.
