Trip To The Kennel

Trip To The Kennel

Putting your dog in it's carrier to take it to the kennel can be heartbreaking for you

, but very stressful for your pet. We can only guess what is going through their minds after we drop them off and leave. The first time you take your dog to a kennel is very confusing to him or her. The age and personality of most dogs will adapt to being housed in a strange place. A younger dog will adapt best, where an older dog does not enjoy a change in their normal, comfortable routine.

Research suggests that your pet starts to miss you from the moment you drop them off. Some pets will lie down and wait patiently until you come back to pick them up. Other dogs will bark continuously until you return, some will scratch and chew anything in site just to help them deal with the stress of abandonment. Some dogs will stop eating or eat very little. Dogs have plenty of fat reserves to live off and a week or so of not eating or eating bare minimum will not hurt them, in fact it may do them some good.

One way to minimize the stress on your dog when you drop them off is to not make a fuss, show no emotion or eye contact, to avoid showing your dog any anxiety you may feel. Make sure everything is set up in advance with the kennel so there won't be any delay in leaving. Hugging and kissing your dog or telling it you will be back can only confuse your pet. I suggest an old scented garment of yours can be left with the dog as a comfort blanket, or better yet bring his own mat or bed to sleep on.

The first visit is always the worst, but after a few times your dog will get accustomed to being brought to a kennel, knowing that you will return to pick him or her up. Dogs prefer to remain in the place they know and feel secure, so if you find your pet is not happy being boarded, ask a friend or family member to sit with your pet while you are away. If no one can accommodate you, look for a pet sitter in your area, the cost is nothing compared to your peace of mind and how happy your pet will be, knowing it can remain in its own environment.
