Treatments For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Treatments For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Before technology wasn't so advanced and there weren't really any proper treatments for obsessive compulsive disorder

. But these days, if you do have OCD you have various options for treatment and hence you dont need to worry about it. In fact there are different types of treatments which we list out here.

First of all we have the medications. This is quite an effective treatment for OCD. Now there are various drugs which you can have. These include serotonin reuptake inhibitors or what we know as SSRI's. You might have heard of a few of these like Prozac, Zoloft and even Paxil. Sometimes Anafranil which is an anti depressant is also used as one of the treatments of OCD. If you take very high doses of SSRI's then you might need only around 12 weeks of it. Sometimes you will find that one type of SSRI's isn't helping your condition and in that case you might have to take a different type which will actually help. But there are a few side effects which people complain about, these include problems involving your sleep and so on.

But you need to keep in mind that research shows, medication is not successful for one third of the patients who have OCD. You even have self help as one of the treatments for OCD. These options are extremely useful. You will find self help books or cd or even eBooks online. These self help treatments give you homework which actually helps in reducing the OCD. You could even try out breathing or meditation or yoga. Sometimes keeping a journal or various other activities will help.

Now if nothing from this work then there is a way. But most people prefer not opting for this treatment. This is basically a surgical procedure. A very small amount of people do not improve after the rest of the treatments of OCD which include medical or cognitive behavioural techniques. A marginal amount of people have OCD so very severe that they have to resort to surgical treatments. This surgical treatment is basically brain surgery. Those parts of the brain are operated on or made inactive which trigger the symptoms of OCD. Around 50 to 70 percent of people see an improvement in their symptoms after the surgery.

Apart from these a new treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder has been devised. This is deep brain simulation. This is actually quite an effective as well as an exciting technique which has helped in treating OCD. Basically an electrode is implanted in your brain and this electrode can actually turn various regions of your brain on and off. But you also need to keep in mind that this is not a hundred per cent effective treatment for OCD and that they are still conducting research on this. But most of the times, the treatments that we have mentioned before truly help in getting rid of the symptoms. But you should try and resort to surgery as your last option and also the medication too.
