Mumbai city is a combination of seven islands that was reclaimed over a period of time

. After occupation of the place, the Portuguese named it Bom Baia which in Portuguese language meant "good bay". The Britishers later called it Bombay. According to another version, the original inhabitants of the islands were fisher folks called Kolis. They worshiped a Hindu deity called Mumbadevi. Bombay is now renamed as Mumbai.

Mumbai took a quantum jump towards modernization following the introduction of the first train in India, from Bombay Victoria Terminus and Thane in 1853. Mumbai, financial capital of India, houses several heritage sites, particularly Gateway of India, which will interest the travellers.

Other important sites in Mumbai are Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Nehru Planetarium, Jehangir Art Gallery, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai Zoo, Taraporewala Aquarium, Chowpatty Beach, Juhu Beach, Vihar Lake, Hanging Gardens, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Nariman Point, Marine Drive (Queens Necklace), Mahalaxmi Temple, Iskcon Temple, Siddhivinayak Temple, Haji Ali Mosque, Vasai Fort, Flora Fountain, Essel World, Water Kingdom, Prince of Wales Museum, Film City, Kanheri Caves, Jogeshwari Caves, Mahalaxmi Race Course and Elephanta Island.

Charminar is synonymous with Hyderabad. The towers of Charminar rise to a height of 48.7 metre above the ground. From the top of minarets, one will get a panoramic view of the City of Pearls. Among the other major attractions in Hyderabad are Mecca Masjid, Jama Masjid, Chowmahalla Palace, Falaknuma Palace, Golconda Fort, Qutb Shahi Tombs, Nizam's Museum, Purani Haveli, Salar Jung Museum and Toli Masjid.

NTR Gardens, St. Josephs Cathedral, Lotus Pond, Ashtalakshmi Temple, Birla Mandir, Osman Sagar Lake, Ramoji Film City, Archival Museum, B.M. Birla Planetarium, Science and Technological Museum, Indira Park, Nehru Zoological Park, and Lotus Pond are among the other attractions in the city.

Hyderabad is well connected with Mumbai by air, rail and road. There are regular flights from Mumbai to Hyderabad, capital of Andhra Pradesh. There are a few daily trains from Mumbai to Hyderabad and back besides some trains which are running on certain days of the week. Among the daily trains are Mumbai-Hyderabad Express (No.17031), Mumbai-Bhuwaneshwar Konark Express (No.11019) and Mumbai-Hyderabad Hussain Sagar Express (No.12701). The trains travel the distance from Mumbai to Hyderabad in about 12 hours.

Travelling by road of a distance of about 750 km is a bit cumbersome. It is costly to travel by taxi cab as the owners charge a rate of Rs.14000 for non-a/c and Rs.19000 for a/c cars. Not many buses run on this route since it is a long distance journey.
