The distance from Delhi to Mumbai is about 1450 km. Mumbai city is actually a combination of seven islands that was reclaimed slowly. The Portuguese, after the occupation of the place, named it 'Bom Baia' which in Portuguese language meant 'good bay'. Another version is that the original inhabitants of the islands were fisher folks called Kolis. They worshiped a Hindu deity called Mumbadevi.

The first train in India ran between Bombay Victoria Terminus and Thane in 1853. Mumbai houses several heritage sites, particularly the Gateway of India, which interest the tourists. Other important sites Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Vasai Fort, Flora Fountain, Essel World, Water Kingdom, Prince of Wales Museum, Nehru Planetarium , Jehangir Art Gallery, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai Zoo, Taraporewala Aquarium, Chowpatty Beach, Juhu Beach, Vihar Lake, Hanging Gardens, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Nariman Point, Marine Drive ('Queen's Necklace'), Mahalaxmi Temple, Iskcon Temple, Siddhivinayak Temple, Haji Ali Mosque, Film City, Kanheri Caves, Jogeshwari Caves, Mahalaxmi Race Course and Elephanta Island.

Mumbai is connected from Delhi by air, rail and road. But since the distance from Delhi to Mumbai is more than 1450 km, travellers usually did not venture to travel by road. There are regular flights from Delhi to Mumbai. The travel by air takes little less than two hours.

There are several trains running on this route. The average time taken to travel from Delhi to Mumbai is 20 hours to 28 hours. Among the daily trains are Firozepur-Mumbai Punjab Mail (No.12138), Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Express (No.12618), Amritsar-Lokmanya Tilak Express (No.11058), Amritsar-Mumbai Golden Temple Express (N.12904), Firozepur-Mumbai Janata Express (No.19024), and two Rajdhani Express trains (Nos. 12952 and 12954). Duronto and Garib Rath expresses are running twice a week.

Taxi cabs charge a fare of Rs. 13 to Rs. 30 per kilometre for travelling from Delhi to Mumbai.
