Many will be all too aware of Lapland as a winter destination but not many are familiar with Lapland as a summer destination but there is as much to do in the summer months as there is in the winter and although parts of Lapland are quieter in the summer months, there is still plenty to see and do.
Late June and July sees the arrival of the summer midnight sun where there is 24 hour light for many weeks, the locals take the opportunity to walk for miles across the lovely countryside and watch the sun hover over the horizon, there really isn't a more beautiful sight.
Although Lapland isn't known for beaches by the sea, there are in fact some beautiful beaches where you can be almost alone. Families take the opportunity to take a packed lunch and swim in the crystal clear waters of the rivers. A boat can be taken from one end of the river to the other and you can laze away the day whilst the children happily play.
Other activities include white water rafting, tubing and canoeing and of course Lapland becomes a fishing haven where at certain times of the year record Salmon can be caught.
Festivals also take place in the summer months and you can decide on the accommodation you want to stay in. Hotels are plentiful especially in the beautiful city of Helsinki but there is also the opportunity to camp where you can light a fire and live in the real outdoors. Many take the opportunity to live from the land and pick the plentiful supply of wild berries and mushrooms which are plentiful in the summer months.
Bear watching is also a great opportunity to see the brown bear in its natural habitat, you can sit out in specially built hides high up in the trees and watch these beautiful creatures go about their daily lives.
Restaurants and bars are all open in the summer months and some great Lapland fare is on offer and all restaurants and bars cater well for the children. The ski slopes are open, although not for skiing but you can take the Gondala lift up the ski slopes and once at the top, you can take in the beautiful scenery which will take your breath away.
Lapland is a beautiful place whenever you go but is now fast becoming a popular summer destination where you can really see what this country has to offer.
