Tourists Want To Visit The Place At The End Of The Earth
Looking for an unspoiled, out of the way vacation spot where you won't be bothered by crowds
? There are a number of vacationers who search up to the ends of the earth for such a trip to a rather isolated location. Coming from New Zealand and South America, the sightseers will be meeting in the ice laden Antarctic continent.There were only a few sealers, scientists, and explorers who have reached the continent discovered in 1820. Image a location that is a size of the United States and Mexico combined but only a few places can be traversed due to the 7,000 foot thick ice blanket. Other than having to sail the stormiest seas, they too have to be in ships that can withstand the impact from ice to get there. Although they'll enjoy 24 hours of sunlight every day temperatures seldom get above freezing.
2,000 miles south of and New Zealand is the Mcmurdo Sound area where just like the south of the Antarctic Circle was where the group of 14 men and 12 women were able to be the first visitors on. With a US Navy facility already existing in this location, about 800 sailors and scientists are staying where British explorers in the past have settled and faced inexplicable hardship and death. Summer south of the equator means winter in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa.
The only women to reach this place were two airline stewardesses who landed briefly in 1957. The women's arrival did not spark any celebratory or enthusiastic greeting especially from the Navymen at McMurdo Station. Actually, the sailors did not appreciate having this affect what they could boast about back home which was not needing to look at women.
Arriving in January and February, ships with tourists are not looked forward to by the people at McMurdo. The civilian technicians, scientists, and sailors all agree that what they do here cannot be done by other people and this is why they were the ones chosen to go. There is not as much adventure when tourists come to Antarctica. This kind of trip means extra services of drinks, tips, laundry, and seasick pills that can be obtained other than the warm pants, kodachrome, mittens, and red parka supplied by the travel service.
Antarctica was inhabited solely by US Navy personnel and American scientists since 1955. Nine scientific stations are also located here and on adjacent islands and they are maintained by other nations. What is the viewpoint of the Navy with regard to tourists? Controlling visitors is not possible for there is no territorial claim that exist, said the commander of naval forces in Antarctica. Any visit to their stations though is another matter.
They only prohibit those who cannot support themselves. Due to a well equipped ship they encounter no such problems. Safety precautions are a must for everyone's sake. From the operational plan of the travel agency comes a sight of complete safety on board.
There are a lot of things to see and do here including the first nuclear power reactor in Antarctica and visitors can attend services at the Chapel of the Snows, visit the ship's store, post exchange, or have a few drinks at the enlisted clubs. Other than hikers, the group also comes with bird watchers and conservationists, and so the possible activities they may be engaging in include searching for penguin rookeries and places where seals, skua gulls, and killer whales stay in not to mention exploring several of the huts left by early explorers.
