Tourism in the Northern Mountains in the Sub Continent few months ago has changed
radically over the past few years thanks to the internet penetration that has integrated the vacation farms and self catering cottages with the mainstream tourism industry as each and every business can be found online over the internet and internet reservations can be made. This has also helped in the increase of per capita income of the local population.Rural tourism is an important part of the Western economies. It is here that the concept of country vacations evolves. In a country vacation the tourists spend their holidays in a country farm or a ranch that is usually self-catered.
The rural enterprises give a sense of belonging with the nature as the tourist is cut off from the hustle and bustle of town and a busy life. These small scale enterprises offer great recreational activities in a rural setting. This is being done because the farm agriculture has lost its appeal and farmers have seen much of austerity over the past few years.
Apart from strengthening the economic base rural tourism is also diversifying the income opportunities at the farm. The entrance and exit barriers are very low and it's a profitable business. Now we talk about the supply side too.
A report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found an increase in rural tourism. Almost thirty years ago a national survey of US residents was taken and it was found that 30% of the sample knew of vacation farms, 36% found this idea appealing, and 18% were more likely to spend their vacations on a farm in the future. Today this is a well developed industry.
This sector has been developed by both the governments and the civil sector across the world. In some cases it was the government policies like in UK and France where the castles and old buildings were created into tourism hotspots from the governmental level and in some cases it was the public private initiatives like in Germany, Australia and Norway.
Investment in this sector is important at the national level especially in agrarian economies especially in the third world where if implemented can bring a great deal of change for the better. The good news is that studies have shown that rural tourism does not compete with traditional farming in its consumption of labour and other farm resources. This would be able to provide much needed panacea for rural development and upliftment in general.
