Pingyao, a well known ancient city in Shanxi Province, is a famous international tourist attraction. More than 20,000 residents moved out of the city in the period 2002 to 2006 to better protect this World Cultural Heritage.
Ming Qing Street
Located in middle of Pingyao Ancient City, Ming Qing Street preserves perfectly the culture relics of shops during Ming and Qing dynasties. It is one of the most important and most prosperous business streets of this ancient city. In this 400-meter-long street, there are 78 ancient shops such as exchange shops, pawnshops, drug stores, meat store, tobacco stores, silk shops etc.
Ancient City Wall
The Ancient City Wall was built about 2,700 years ago. Expanded in the Ming dynasty, it is the most well-preserved wall among the ancient historical and cultural city walls in China. The circumference of Pingyao city is 6,157.7 meters. The top of the wall is 3 to 6 meter-wide and the bottom 9 to 12-meter-wide. Its height is 10 meters (except the fort wall). The east, west and north walls are square and straight, while the south wall is serpentine, hence the ancient city is also called the city of the turtle. The southern gate looks like the head, the northern gate like the tail, the four gates in the west and east like the four legs and the four major streets, eight small streets and 72 lanes like designs on the back of the turtle. In ancient China, a turtle was the symbol of longevity and peace.
Rishengchang Private Bank
The Rishengchang Private Bank, located in Pingyao, Shanxi province, is considered as the first exchange bank in China''s history. It was founded in 1823 and lived for 100 years. Wang's Courtyard had been listed as the National Key Cultural Protection Units in year 2006.
Zhangbi Ancient Village
Zhangbi Ancient Village also known as Zhangbi Ancient Castle which located at Longfeng Zhen (Dragon and Phoenix Town), Jiexiu City of Shanxi Province is one of the National Heritage Conservation Units and at the same time was named as one of the Top 10 Charming Town by CCTV in year 2005. Zhangbi Ancient Village is well known for its unique architecture where it looks like a castle on the ground but in fact, there is a long tunnel which connects this castle with the world outside underground. It had been a multi-purpose castle which served as a military center, residential area, production site as well as religious activity throughout the history.
