Tooth Decay in Children - A Comprehensive Review

Tooth Decay in Children - A Comprehensive Review

Tooth decay in children is a common tooth related problem

. In the case of dental decay, small holes or cavities form on the outer surface of the teeth. These cavities or the holes are usually formed due to the collapse of the hard dental tissues.

If a child suffers from mild tooth decay, the cavities will not be too deep but in some severe cases, the holes can be very deep and this can hamper the surrounding nerve tissues and blood vessels. Children, who are addicted to sweet foods, are more susceptible to this disease.

Bacterial infection is the main cause of tooth decay in children. Bacteria generally reside on the surface of the teeth and they get nourishment from the foods and drinks that are taken. These bacteria produce some acids that can affect the coating of the teeth which is known as enamel.

Enamel is the protective belt of teeth that prevent it from possible harms. As these bacteria harm enamel, tooth decay is inevitable. This can be triggered taking sweet drinks and foods. If a child does not brush his teeth regularly, there is a great chance that he will suffer from dental decay in near future. The center of teeth can be infected by this disease and if it happens, acute toothache or infection may occur.

A child should visit a dentist regularly to stay away from this problem. One should shun acidic or sweet foods that can increase the risk of tooth decay. Regular tooth brushing can thwart the formation of acids that can affect the enamel which is the main reason of tooth decay. As milk teeth don't have thick coating of enamel on it, they are more vulnerable to tooth decay.

Taking some foods or drinks such as cheese and milk after the completion of meal can restrict the impact of tooth decay. This can generate a neutralizing effect. Drinking plenty of water can also yield some good result.

Toothpaste that contains fluoride should be used while brushing. This mineral can prevent the problem of tooth decay efficaciously.
