Tired Of Paying For Expensive Fuel? It's Time To Go Hybrid

Tired Of Paying For Expensive Fuel? It's Time To Go Hybrid

Driving a car in 2010 is an expensive thing to do; there's no two ways about it

. The AA are explaining that petrol has never been so high - you should expect to pay around 120.5 pence per litre of unleaded fuel at petrol stations - and new first year rates for car tax can be astronomical if you're vehicle isn't overly environmentally friendly.

If you're tired of paying a substantial amount of your salary on your car, but still need the convenience and freedom that owning a car offers, then it could well be time to move to a hybrid.

Although hybrid cars - those with an engine that runs on two types of fuel, such as petrol and electric - are only just coming into prominence, they have actually been around for almost as long as cars have themselves. In 1900, for instance, the Lohner-Porsche Electromobile went into production for 5 years, running on electric motors and a battery or petrol engine.

As the basis of many modern day hybrid cars, the Lohner-Porsche Electromobile, although not inspiring Porsche to put any hybrid cars into Porsche dealers just yet (although an electric 911 is planned), it has had a massive influence on a range of different manufacturers, as can be seen by the amount of hybrid cars that are now available. The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are both prime examples of hybrid cars that were influenced by the Lohner-Porsche Electromobile, with the companies bringing their designs into the modern day and making their vehicles some of the most popular hybrids available.

First launched in 1997, the Prius is now into its fourth generation (known as the NHW20) and according to an Associated Press article on 8 January 2010, has sold over 1.6 million across the globe, making it the best selling hybrid car ever.

Able to exceed a rate of 65 MPG, although there are several diesel cars on the market that have a better MPG ratio, there is no doubting that it is one of the best cars in respect of helping to save the environment, as the third generation Prius had a minimal 89 g/km worth of CO2 emissions. Fantastic for the environment, it is also fantastic for the owner's bank account, as with CO2 emissions this low, the UK government provide completely free vehicle tax.

There are various aspects that need to be taken into consideration if you're thinking about buying an electric car, but even still, they more often than not still prove to be a great car financially when compared to a standard petrol or diesel car. For example, repair costs may be slightly higher on a hybrid, largely for the fact that it is difficult to use second hand parts as the cars aren't widely popular yet and although you may have to stop on long journeys every few hours to recharge the engine, the battery life is getting better year on year and it is expected in the near future that there will be no need to recharge as often, with hope of it being only once a day.

Electric hybrid cars are without doubt the future and if you can purchase one now, it's highly recommended to do so - you'll not only be saving the environment, but you'll be saving a fortune, too.
