Tips For a Safe Halloween

With Halloween only a week away it is time to start talking to our children about safety while trick-or-treating. Halloween these days isn't like it used to be when children would start trick-or-treating after it got dark and stay out until they had so much candy in their bags that they couldn't even hold them anymore. These days there seem to be more dangers to look out for and there are less parents and children on the streets. Whether your children are still at the age where you have to take them out to gather all of their goodies or your children will be off trick-or-treating on their own there are a few tips that will keep them safe and sound on Halloween night. Be sure your children know the importance of following safety tips in order to protect them from any unsuspected dangers.
Make sure that your children know that it is not only children that celebrate Halloween and that many adults attend parties on this night as well. Children should know to walk on sidewalks at all times and to be extremely careful when crossing the roads. In a perfect world people would remember that Halloween is a night for children and would not drink and drive but this is far from a perfect world and drunk drivers have got to be taken into consideration. Children should be alert and pay attention to their surroundings in order to avoid any accidents involving drivers that have been drinking. As a parent you should also report any drunken driving incidents you may be aware off as well.
Be sure that your children are either wearing lighter colored clothing or have some sort of reflective clothing or stickers on so that they can be seen on the dark streets. Of course some costumes require dark clothing but you can find reflectors at almost any department or drug store that you can attach to their clothing so that they can be easily seen.
Carrying a flashlight while trick-or-treating is also a good idea so that your children can see where they are going if they come across a dark spot along their path. This is also good for when it comes time to cross the street and for later in the evening when it gets darker and your children are on their way home. A small flash light that fits easily in your child's coat pocket works best and are fairly inexpensive as well.
Finally, be sure that your child knows not to eat any candy without having it checked by a trusted adult first. Children should also know not to candy that has been opened nor has a package that has been tampered with as well and treats made by a person you or your child does not know should be discarded immediately.
Following these few simple safety tips on Halloween night will keep your children safe and Halloween fun for years to come. Times may be changing but a child's love for Halloween will always be the same so keep them safe so that they can continue to enjoy this favorite of holidays.About the Author:
