Tips For Hassle Free Airline Travel
Careful Packing Saves Stress...
Always be aware of your weight allowance, this allowance is dropping day by day and varies lots between airlines and aircraft. It can be anywhere from 15kg to 32kg so it makes sense to check before you pack. Travel Scales can be purchased to check the weight before you leave and are small and light enough to be packed to weigh you luggage on the way back. Even if you just use inaccurate bathroom scales it will still be an improvement.
Sometimes you are able to pool your luggage allowance but dont count on it and always check. With some airlines buying extra bags wont provide you any more luggage weight so check this as well.
Remember, it is a false economy to use larger suitcases, because the weight of them alone will affect the allowance.
Luggage
Ensure that your bag doesnt weigh to much and has wheels. The bigger the bag the more it is likely to weigh and the more of a pain it will be when you are wheeling it across the airport floor. What if you have to walk for miles without a travellator? Are you going to put your back out?
Same goes with hand baggage, you are often allowed up to 10kilos but this might not be a comfortable amount to carry so make sure you get yourself some wheels.
Make sure you write your name on all your luggage so that if you lose your bag it will hopefully find you again!
Like Duh...
Always make sure you have decent travel insurance that will cover you in all eventualities... Crazy as it might have seemed a few years ago. Maybe Volcano insurance is a good idea, prepare!
Take a photocopy of your passport and any useful documents so that you can prove your identity if you happen to lose them.
Make sure you havent packed any items over 100ml in your hand luggage, you probably dont want to have to throw out your expensive makeup or vintage 1963 wine. So forget the drinks, even bottled water! You can always buy what you need at vast expense once youve gone through security and are waiting airside.
Dont pack sharp items or explosives, no knives and no guns! But I really hope you already knew this.
Get prepared for a body search...
Make sure you arent carrying any metal, lighters or sharp objects when you pass through the body scanner. Take off any belts and if necessary any shoes or coats, this will save a huge amount of time go in back and forth through the body scanner until you get it right or the evil tuts of the people behind you that you hold up with your faffing. Try to stay polite no matter how frustrating things get, you really dont want to end up getting the full cavity search.
Touchdown:
If you are flying internationally it is quite likely that you will need to fill in a landing card so try to have a pen with you. Once you arrive be prepared to queue through customs, try and remain polite and no matter how long your flight has been in the air resist the temptation to smoke in the baggage claim area or risk getting carted away and missing your holidays.
