Fuerteventura Hotels: What To Do On Holiday In The Canaries

The pretty island of Fuerteventura in the Canaries is an ideal choice for those seeking a relaxing break

. Boasting a warm climate year-round with around 300 days of sunshine a year, Fuerteventura has a plethora of opportunities for activity and relaxation in the sun. Its facilities are well designed to help holidaymakers forget the cares of daily life, from spas, restaurants, bars and watersports centres to numerous Fuerteventura hotels and resorts.

Beaches

Fuerteventura's coastline boasts over 150 beautiful beaches. The beach of Corralejo, near the nature reserve in the north of the island, provides a family-friendly place to enjoy the island's pristine sands. Due to its location near Corralejo town centre, families can easily purchase food and drinks and make use of other amenities. Just outside the capital city of Puerto Rosario, meanwhile, lie the sparkling white sands of Puerto Blanco. Lifeguards and a flag system help alert visitors to the safety of the undertow and surf.

Watersports are a popular pastime on the island. Fuerteventura's regular strong winds make it a great spot for surfers and wind surfers in particular. A number of schools on the island offer lessons and equipment rental to holidaymakers interested in learning the sports. Various dive schools also operate in the area, catering to enthusiasts who want to explore the wreck of the American Star near Playa de Garcy.

Things to See - North

Drive to the north of the island where you can enjoy a scenic view of the island from the Mirador de Morro Velosa viewpoint. Continue north to the Corralejo Nature Reserve and rent a jeep to explore the sand dunes, a lavascape and Montaa Roja. Or take a short glass-bottomed boat trip from Corralejo to the deserted island of Los Lobos, which is home to over 130 different species of plants and animals.

Things to See - South

Holidaymakers heading south can take part in Camel Safari expeditions, which combines camel rides with a visit to the zoo and a traditional Canary Islands meal. En route, stop and explore Puerto Rosario, Fuerteventuras capital city. For a change of pace, catch a ferry to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote from Puerto Rosario to visit some of the other Canary Islands. On the western side of the island lies Betancuria, the isles original capital. Visit the citys 15th century cathedral and see the archaeological remnants of the islands first inhabitants, the Guanches, in the city's archaeological museum.
