Srinagar: With the Kashmir witnessing three consecutive core summers of killing spree, Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) on Human Rights day released a report in Kashmir which said that that more than 1,600 people including 819 militants and 400 civilians have been killed in last three years across the state.

The report has provided a detailed summery of the number of killing over the last three years.

Most of those killed over the last three years are militants. In 2008, the report says 359 militants were killed in the state, while as 242 were killed in 2009 and 218 were killed this year so far.

The three consecutive summers of protests and shutdowns in Kashmir valley have also witnessed a heavy toll of civilian killings.

The report shows that 400 civilians were killed in three years and alleges most of the civilians were killed at the hands of Indian forces.

In 2008, when valley witnessed the land agitation, 152 civilians were killed with report claiming 75 were killed by security forces, 17 by militants and 47 by unidentified gunmen.

In 2009, 84 civilians were killed. The report claims 27 civilians were killed by troops, 7 by militants and 26 by unidentified gunmen.

In 2010, which saw the some of the longest spells of shutdowns and curfews in the valley, 164 civilians were killed in the state.

The report claims 133 civilians were killed by troops, 6 by militants and 19 by unidentified gunmen.

This year, valley witnessed a severe crackdown by forces on the protestors who hit the streets after a three youth were killed in a fake encounter by Army in Nadihal and subsequent killing of a teenager Tufail Matoo who was hit in the head by a tear smoke canister fired by a policeman. August witnessed the largest number of civilian killings in the three months.

The valley has been under strife conditions since June 11.112 people have lost their lives most of the teenagers at the hands of state forces. The incessant curfews and separatist called strikes have affected the lives of civilians. (AIP)
