Things To Consider Before Making A Purchase

Selecting new carpet can seem like a daunting task

. There are only so many swatches of colors and styles that you can go through before you start to feel overwhelmed. There are indeed countless options when selecting new carpeting for your home, but if you carefully plan out what you are looking for before going out and hunting for the perfect swatch, you can seriously narrow down the options and save yourself a giant headache.

First, and most importantly, what is the style of room you are replacing the flooring in, or what type of style are you trying to create with your new carpet? This will primarily affect the type and feel of the carpeting you select. Shorter, coarser carpeting generally gives off more of a refined atmosphere than the longer variety. If you are going for class and elegance, short berber-style carpeting may be the way to go. Berber carpets use tight loops of an even height to create a level surface that is more resistant to matting than the more common tufted carpets. They also have a unique flecked appearance that adds a bit of character to the room.

For a softer, more comforting look you might want to consider longer tufted carpeting. With this style, the material is injected directly into the backing material, which makes it stand up more than its looped cousins. This does not just create a softer look, it is literally softer to the touch as well, making it a great choice for any room where footwear is optional. Tufted carpeting is the most common type of carpeting and is the traditional choice for a homier, comforting feel.

For a more exotic look, a woven style may be a good choice for you. Berber carpets are just one type of woven carpeting, known as a loop style. Cut style carpeting is also available using the same methods but without the coarse, tight loops of berber. With woven styles, many different colors are often used, which can be used to create intricate patterns that can really make your flooring stand out from others. If you are interested in a unique pattern on your carpeting that you can be sure visitors have never seen before, woven carpeting is probably your best bet.

Once you have decided on a style of carpeting, you will need to decide on a color. Since carpets are synthetic, you are not limited to the natural shades found in hardwood or stone floors. Carpets can be dyed just about any color imaginable, so consider carefully what shade you want before you settle on one. Slight variations in color can create very different effects, especially when expanded to an entire room. Make sure your new carpets match your existing furniture, or you may soon find yourself with an itch to replace all your furnishings as well. Use swatches to compare side by side, and if you can, compare them to your furniture as well.

Now that you have a general idea of what you are after, there are still other considerations to be made that can further narrow down your search. Where the carpeting is going to be placed, as well as who will be using it, for example, is a huge factor that plays into what you ultimately decide on. Nylon, the most common fabric used in carpets, is the cheapest material you can use, but is also the least resistant to stains. Anyone with children or pets may want to consider investing a little extra in a wool or wool blend carpet that is more naturally resistant to spills and moisture.

Of course, no carpeting is completely stain-proof, and darker shades tend to hide little indiscretions better. Parents of small children often choose darker colored carpeting for just this reason, as even the most careful of parents cannot always keep their little angel from making their mark on the new floor. Pet owners also tend to lean towards darker shades for just the same reason.

High-traffic areas must be considered as well, as they will see more wear and tear than others and will need carpeting that is more durable. Tufted-style carpeting tends to show more matting than the other styles, as does any carpeting made with polyester rather than nylon or wool. Shorter carpet with loops tends to hold up better to heavy use.

In the end, the carpet you choose really just comes down to personal preference, but by considering these issues before you head out on your journey for the perfect flooring, you can keep yourself from getting lost in a sea of swatches and styles.
