There's More than One Way to Deter Birds

There's More than One Way to Deter Birds

Whether you own a home, boat, plane or building

. Whether you're a facilities manager, restaurant owner or a park superintendent. You know what pest birds can do. And what they cost you every year in repairs and clean up. Bird droppings discolor and destroy wood, rot metal and crumble stonework. They carry up to 60 known diseases, which for restaurant owners can be disastrous. Left to collect on a sidewalk, entrance or walkway, bird droppings can cause severe slip-and-fall hazards, creating a huge liability for property owners. Pest birds inhaled in aircraft engines can bring down an entire passenger jet--U.S. Airways flight 1549 had to splash down in the Hudson River after a flock of geese flew into its engines. Between 1976 and 2007, there were 76,000 reported Bird Strikes with birds and aircraft. So what are the best ways to deter birds? One economical way is through the use of Bird Scare products. These run the gamut from iridescent reflective foil or flash tape to blow-up balloons covered with threatening predator eyes. These simple bird deterrents create an "optical distraction" zone that scares birds away. They're ideal for most open areas like patios, overhangs, gazebos, eaves, pools, and the like. To keep pest birds from becoming accustomed to these deterrents, it's best to change their position and color. Another "bird-hazing" system is one that releases a super fine mist of methyl anthranilate to deter birds. The chemical, a grape extract that naturally occurs in concord grapes, has been used for decades to deter sparrows, pigeons, starlings, crows, blackbirds and geese. Safe for people, pets, plants and birds, the systems come in a variety of configurations to allow pinpoint and timed control of the mist. Still another way to deter pest birds from landing is the Bird Spider. This nifty little device features spider arms that wave threateningly in the breeze. Spiders are available in a number of diameters to deter birds of different sizes. Ideal for patios, awnings, and boat covers, spiders are essentially maintenance free and harmless to birds. There's also the ever popular and highly effective Bird Spike. Composed of spiked strips, they look menacing, are harmless to birds and deter pest birds from landing. They're ideal for rooftops, awnings, gutters, girders, roof peaks and ledges. Some strips have spikes fabricated of rigid U.V.-resistant unbreakable polycarbonate. In areas where electrical conductivity is not a problem, you can use strips with flexible stainless steel spikes. Be sure to install spike strips to enclose corners and open sides of a ledge or you'll have birds just sneaking around them. Another simple but effective solution to deter birds is the Bird Slope. Birds just can't get a solid footing on the angled PVC panels, which means they basically can't land, get bored and leave. Bird slope panels come in a rainbow of colors to match a building's structures dcor. They're easily installed on most surfaces using glue or screws. If you want them to last, opt for the UV- stabilized polycarbonate panels. If you're stuck with pest birds, here's a sticky solution to deter birds--Bird Gel. You apply this non-toxic goop with a caulking gun and when it dries, it leaves a sticky, tacky surface that birds can't stand. Ideal for flat or rounded surfaces, including pipes, conduit, ledges, I-beams, and parapet walls. Bird netting is another option. Generally available in 3/4", 1-1/8" and 2" mesh sizes, it blocks most pest birds without harming them. You can get agricultural netting to deter birds from fruit trees, crops, and vineyards. Or heavy duty netting to exclude birds from large buildings and other major structures. The most durable netting is U.V. stabilized, flame resistant and rot and waterproof. If you're concerned about signal interference issues, you can opt for non-conductive webbing. One note on installation: cover window recesses, balconies and entire rooftops to prevent birds from sneaking in. Next up is the Electric-Track bird repeller. These deter birds by delivering an annoying shock to birds trying to land. Ideal for flat or curved surfaces, these low-profile electrified track systems conform to most building designs and they're almost invisible to those looking up from ground level. Choose tracks that have a flow-thru design, which will prevent water from damming up on rooftops and other surfaces. Some tracks feature marine grade knitted wire thats impervious to alkali and acidic environments to resist corrosion. Opt for tracks with a knitted design featuring a single strand of higher gauge wire and a tube-within-a-tube configuration. If you like the sound of no birds, you'll want to look at Sonic Pest Bird Repellers. They emit distress and predator calls for up to 22 types of birds. The sounds can be heard for up to one acre. Sonic repellers deter birds from garden areas, pools, patios, gazebos, rooftops and other similar spaces. Seems everyone is going solar these days, so why not a Solar Powered Bird Repeller? With its arms whirling at a heady 30 RPM, pest birds wouldn't dare land. Ideal for pigeons, seagulls and larger birds. Perfect for billboards, signs, parapet walls, roofs, or any flat surface.
