Every woman needs to be aware of the consequences of smoking while pregnant. The following are a few of the known consequences of smoking while pregnant.

Smoking during pregnancy can lead to your child's premature death. Second hand smoke is also very dangerous and increases your child's risk of dying from SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome. SIDS is the death of a child less than one year of age with no apparent cause of death. This is obviously an extreme risk to take as a pregnant mother. We tend to feel that education and awareness can go a long way and if more smoking mothers were aware of the dangers, more of them would quit smoking.

A certain percentage of pregnancies each year are ectopic pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancies are when the embryo becomes implanted in the fallopian tube instead of in the uterus as normal. There can be all kinds of serious complications from ectopic pregnancies. As you may imagine, already, women who smoke while pregnant have a significant risk of an ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, there are risks that can negatively impact the placenta when there is smoking during pregnancy. Obviously, not only are these serious risks for the fetus but also the mothers health and well-being, too.

This is only one of the many risks associated with smoking while pregnant. Some of the additional risks include but are not limited to mental retardation, difficulty learning and cerebral palsy. Sudden infant death is the biggest risk of smoking while pregnant. It's a fact that you cannot avoid the risks of smoking while pregnant and they are potentially severe. It's a fact that your baby has no say in the smoke you thrust upon them. If you plan to nurse after the baby is born avoid smoking then too as the nicotine affects breast milk too. The decision to quit is up to you if you are smoking and pregnant get the facts and finally quit. Seek the help of your doctor so you can find a way to quit, no matter how hard it is for you..
