The Russian President Wants Nato To Eradicate The Drug Trade In Afghanistan
The President of Russia has expressed his desire that NATO eradicate the drug trade in Afghanistan
. This sounds well and noble but there are many reasons that it is just not feasible and a waste of time for the NATO allies serving in Afghanistan. Now drugs are just as big of a problem in Russia as anywhere else in the world. So with that being said Russia would reap huge benefits from the eradication of the drug trade in Afghanistan.One of the major drug routes extends out of the northern part of Afghanistan and into Russia. Russia has a very large organized crime problem which capitalizes on the drug trade out of Afghanistan, and they have drug use problems within their population just as much as any other NATO country.
The first and primary focus of the US and NATO in Afghanistan is to secure the government of that country against the control of the Taliban and to drive al-Qaeda out of their safe havens. We are not there to be the drug police. The people who are serving there are military people trained in warfare and that is what they are best at doing. If we try to make them into something different we can really open up a can of worms.
The US and NATO did attempt to eradicate the poppy crops of Afghanistan but it proved to be a futile effort so they began to concentrate more of fighting the war. First of all most of the farmers who grow opium poppies are dirt poor. When you burn their crops you take away their livelihood and their means of putting food on the table for their families. This produces so many negative effects that we found that it was a course of action not worth pursuing. The intelligence assistance and other help that we garner from the local population is invaluable to our forces fighting there. So much so that a trade off had to be made. We couldnt allow the hunt for opium poppies to distract our attention from fighting the war.
NATO and the US have instituted a program to persuade poppy farmers to grow other crops instead. This program has had some success but it has a way to go.
The Russian president says that he would in effect put a security ring around Afghanistan to block the flow of drugs out of the country if NATO would do more to eradicate them. This sounds good but NATO has enough on its plate with the war so that it does not need to take on the job of drug interdiction. He goes on to say that he wont ever commit troops to Afghanistan to fight the problem and also claims that Russia was able to cut off the flow of drugs when it occupied Afghanistan years ago.
Russia should be more forthcoming with aid if it is to expect drug traffic in the area to be stopped. There are too many entities which make a whole lot of money from the sale of illegal drugs in that area to expect immediate results. Stopping the traffic of drugs out of Afghanistan will prove to be as difficult as driving out the terrorist elements which use it as a safe haven. It is just not possible. We may slow down the flow, but that will require a large expenditure of money and manpower.
Since this action would be beneficial to the entire world then every country who will gain should be required to provide manpower and funding to make it happen. We are not talking about a project that will be completed in a year or two. We are talking about a lifelong commitment. Military Ring Express
