Though the Australia's economy didn't suffer the recession as much as other countries like the US and Japan did, it did significantly slow down to the point that it can not sufficiently handle the additional number of people coming in.
It for this reason that many people are suggesting the the Department of Immigration and Citizenship should impose a higher cut on the number of immigrants coming in. they say that this should be done in order for the economy to recover to the point that it will be able to handle the influx of foreigners sufficiently again. They also note that, at the current situation, immigrant labor will actually be more of a competition to local workers.
However, those who are against immigration cuts say that this will actually do more harm than good. As it is, they said that the small Australian population will not be able to handle the size of their economy. Thus, the country will be needing all the foreign labor it can get to sustain their growth. They also say that this is the moment that the country needs the gains brought about by immigration the most.
As it is, this one will likely be a standing issue for a while. And for their part, immigrants will have to wait and see if these cuts do push through.
