The Development of Microscope
The limitation on Leeuwenhoek microscope is on the strength of a convex lens used
. To overcome it, the extra lens that is placed exactly in front of the eyes of observer should be used. The extra lens is called the eyepiece, so the object of the first lens can be enlarged again by using this second lens.
In the next development, the distance regulator between the two lenses is added to sharpen the focus. A mirror or other light sources, object fences which can be moved, and many more are also added.
Modern light microscope can provide magnification up to 1000 times and allow the human eye to be able to distinguish two objects that have distance approximately 0.0002 mm. It is known that a healthy human eye has a resolution power about 0.2 mm. In the subsequent development, it is known that the ability of a convex lens to provide high resolution has reached the limit although the quality and number of lenses has been improved.
Later, it is known that the wavelength of the light source is used for lighting effects at a higher resolution power. Also, it is known that resolution power can not be shorter than the wavelength of light that is used for observation.
The use of light with shorter wavelengths, such as blue or ultra violet rays can give a little improvement. Then, with the additional use of substances that has a high refractive index (such as oil), the resolution can be increased up to 100 nanometers. This result is not satisfactory yet for the researchers, so the search for the new microscope will be continued.
