Kids entertainment has taken a decided turn towards the indoor variety: television series
, video and computer games, online social networks, indoor parties. Surely, this is a result of technological advances but also of the marked urbanization the world is going through. Every generation has fewer children with grandparents in the countryside to spend summer holidays with, so contact with the rural environment has diminished considerably. Farm animals are a major attractions for the kids, better than any amusement park, especially if they are allowed to take part in activities. Some farms offer guided tours of their stock, so that grazing sheep, milk-giving cows and ever-hungry pigs can be experienced directly. Also, you might give the little ones a first hand view of where bread comes from, by sending them on a tractor ride to the grain fields. Should the skies become cloudy or worse, explore the playground potential of the barn.
Take advantage of your surroundings and help your child grow fond of natural food. Visit the local baker, butcher or cheese-maker and ask them to show you how their products are made - some even organize these viewings, with yummy samplings at the end. It is very unlikely that the rich, savory taste of natural, fresh food, without any additives or preservatives, will fail to win over the entire family.
Man-made beauties in the shape of old stone manors are also worth a visit, so as not to forget that man did tame nature and not only in an invasive way. These aged houses blend in their surroundings perfectly, and walking their halls might give you a feel of how it was like to live in the 17th, 18th or 19th century. Wonderful details in the furniture, ceilings and ornaments will enthrall you and the phrase idyllic setting will come alive in your mind.
