The Comparisons between Natural Diamonds and Man-Made Diamonds

If you have little knowledge about the features of natural diamonds, you may easily be confused by synthetic diamonds which look similar to natural diamonds at the first sight but totally different inside and outside. Here I'd like to talk about some basic distinctions between the two kinds of diamonds, which hopefully may help you in one way or another when you prepare to buy diamond jewelries next time.

Natural stones are formed in the earth when carbon is put under incredible pressure and heat. Diamonds come from deep within the Earth's crust, formed there by the incredible pressure and relatively manageable temperatures. They form beneath the continental crust, from pure carbon. Since the formation of these stones needs tens of thousands of years, they are nonrenewable resources, thus, these stones are very rare and expensive in the market.

Man-made diamonds have a large variety of characteristics including their function as an excellent electrical insulator, high thermal rating, transparent to UV, visible, and infrared light, and chemically inert to nearly all acids and bases. To create artificial diamonds, you replicate what happens under natural conditions using a high temperature high pressure (HTHP) method. It can take as little as a few days to create three carat diamond. However, the diamonds lack the timeless quality embraced by natural diamonds.

There are many manufacturers producing artificial diamonds in a large scale, thus the price of them is way lower than authentic diamonds. Apart from a lower price tag, there are some other reasons why some people would choose to buy a man-made diamond. For many people, they will wear valuable natural diamonds only for some special and important occasions such as weddings, big evening parties or social gatherings. While in ordinary days, they will use man-made diamond jewelries to accessorize their daily dresses.
