The Bund - A Metropolis On An Embankment
'The Bund' is synonymous with Shanghai's popular tourist destination along the banks of the Huangpu River
. Shanghai is one of China's ancient cities and has an abundance of history and culture. Over the last few centuries the area around the bund has grown to glorious heights of importance and even fallen to the doldrums of insignificance depending on political attributes.
Currently the mound follows the river for a mile and houses some of the most inimitably styled buildings, most of which function as banks, insurance companies, hotels and media corporations. Along the East part of the Bund, there is a group of three stainless steel sculptures. One is known as the 'Light of the Huangpu River', while the other two are called the Sculpture Sail and the Sculpture Wind. As you stroll down you will encounter the statue of 'Chenyi', the first mayor of Shanghai in liberated China. Something you don't want to miss while you ramble on the Bund is the 'Sight-Seeing Tunnel'. It runs beneath the waters of the Huangpu River and is a well lit, fast and adventurous way to get to the other side of the river and back. A Huangpu River ferry or cruise is an alternative mode of getting across to Pudong.
The Bund terminates at the Huangpu Park which houses a commemorative monument in recognition of those who fought to liberalize China from Western powers. After Shanghai became an international port in the 19th century, this park was opened by a Scottish gardener to cater to the many immigrants who resided in the area. Subsequently, for a period of about four decades the gardens were reserved solely for the foreign community. The Bund Historical Museum also lies within the premises of the park and pictorially relates the evolution of the Bund.
