Textbooks For Cheap: How to Save Money When You Buy Textbooks

Is it possible to buy textbooks for cheap? If you are going to college, or planning to attend soon, this is something that you may be wondering. Textbooks are becoming an increasingly large expense. In today's difficult economy, having to put out hundreds of dollars (in some cases over $1,000) for textbooks can be quite painful for many people.
Once you get accustomed to the routine of taking college classes and getting textbooks, you may become angry at the system. First of all, the books are just so expensive! Then, they constantly update them year after year whether it's necessary or not. Naturally, the professor or course syllabus tells you that you have to get the latest edition of the book.
You might be able to squeak by without a textbook in some cases. If you have a friend taking the same class, you could always share. You could look up a lot of information online and at the college library. However, if you are a conscientious student, you probably want your own textbook. Let's look at some ways you may be able to find a cheap -or at least cheaper- alternative to the outrageous prices of a new retail textbook.
Check the bulletin boards at your college; students often sell books from previous years. In the vast majority of cases, it won't make a difference if you don't have the very latest edition. Publishers mainly update them to make more money. Of course, if it's a subject that changes very quickly, like computer programming, and the book is ten years old, you really will need a newer one. You have to use common sense, but for most subjects the material does not change substantially in one or two years. On this note, be sure to always save your own textbooks once you are finished with them, either to resell to other students or trade them in for new ones.
Also look in used bookstores in your area, or anywhere else that sells used books. Yard sales and flea markets may even be a good place to look, especially in college towns. Then, of course, there is the internet. Search for the book you need. In all likelihood, you can find a cheaper copy than a new one in your college bookstore. You do have to factor in shipping charges. If you are going to order several books, try to get them at the same time, as this usually enables you to get a better rate on shipping.
It is often possible to buy textbooks for cheap, or at least less expensive prices than retail. It is not something you can avoid 100% of the time, but it's certainly worth looking around to save money when you buy textbooks.About the Author:
