Teeth Whitening: Treatment Options For Different Types Of Tooth Staining

Teeth whitening treatments are very popular. However, before deciding to undertake a cosmetic dentistry procedure to remove stains from the teeth it is important that some basic rules are followed.

The first rule is that teeth with any kind of dental problem (cavities, infections etc.) are not eligible for a cosmetic dentistry procedure until the underlying health issues are resolved. Teeth whitening does not improve dental health, but it can have amazing effect in improving the teeth appearance as long as the teeth are already healthy.

The second rule is that if the overall general health of an individual has grave complaints like heart ailments, then cosmetic dentistry is definitely not recommended. If necessary, you may need to get your general physician to sign off on your cosmetic dentistry treatment to ensure your safety.

The third rule has to do with the type of staining affecting the teeth. If the teeth have intrinsic stains due to use of antibiotics during the formative period of the teeth (tetracycline stains), then the recommended cosmetic dentistry treatment is typically porcelain veneers. Bleaching is not the right option in this case, because tetracycline stains are embedded in the teeth structure. Similarly, fluorosis teeth stains are typically treated with porcelain veneers.

If the stains are superficial or surface stains, then bleaching is an option. However, it is always important to remember that teeth coloration can return to darker shades if proper care is not taken, even after bleaching. Since teeth bleaching is a chemical process on the enamel of the teeth, dentists recommend that a professional teeth cleaning procedure should be applied before bleaching. If your teeth color still feels unsatisfactory, even after cleaning, then you can opt for the cosmetic bleaching of the teeth. Cleaning the teeth before bleaching actually helps the bleaching by removing the plaque from the teeth.
