Teeth Whitening: Is It Right For You?

Studies have shown many reasons for your teeth to have discolored over time

. Things that we eat like tea, coffee, red wine, dark soda, spices and smoking will leave stains on your teeth. These will stain or discolor your teeth over a long period of time.

And some people are just not born with pearly white teeth. Teeth also discolor with advancing age. Thankfully, simply whitening your teeth can take years off your appearance.

Many people with teeth which are not as white as they would like will consider undergoing a tooth whitening procedure to lighten the color of their teeth. But is the whitening process safe? Throughout the many years of clinical research on this topic, there have been no credible studies suggesting carcinogenic, or otherwise detrimental effects.

The main ingredient in most professional teeth whitening products is carbamide peroxide (10%), a substance that contains 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. This composition creates whitening effect through oxidation, easily removing the toughest organic pigments and chromogens. You're left with teeth that are whiter.

Clinical studies have shown that whitening is both safe and effective. Of course, patients should always be careful to use these products responsibly. Just as with any other product, the accompanying instructions should be followed closely.

Whitening is not recommended for people whose teeth are already quite white. The reason is that they would not see much of a difference, leaving them disappointed and feeling that they wasted their money. It is also not recommended if patients have many white fillings or crowns or bridges on the front teeth because theses will not change in colour.

A dentist will recommend that a patient undergo a whitening process before they opt for a restorative procedure. If the restorative work or appliance is on the posterior teeth, it will not affect the patients smile. Neither patients nor dentists who are pregnant or lactating should be around teeth whitening chemicals.

It is highly recommended to get whitening done by a professional so that advice and follow up are received. Additionally, only a dentist can construct whitening trays which will conform to your mouth properly and make sure that all of your teeth are whitening evenly. This gel is not meant to be swallowed.

Your teeth will also be thoroughly cleaned to remove any tarter that might interfere with the proper fit of the dental trays and to correctly assess the situation. If your dentist gives you the okay for the whitening procedure, the next step is to make an impression of your upper and lower teeth. The impression is created by resting a tray filled with a gooey substance over your teeth until it sets.

The impressions are now sent out to a laboratory where they will cast an exact replica of your teeth. Using these models, trays are made out of a type of plastic. And finally, the trays are sent to your dentist's office.

When they return you will be shown how to put them in and advised how to use the kit. Typically, the routine involves applying the whitening gel to the trays, inserting them into your mouth while you sleep. In the morning, the trays are removed and you continue the process until your teeth reach a specified level of whitening.
