Sumo Wrestling is the national game of Japan. This ancient game began as a means to entertain the Shinto Gods and many ancient religious practices are still a part of the sport. Sumo championship tournaments are held every year in major cities like Osaka, Tokyo, Fukuoka and Nagoya. Each tournament lasts for a fortnight; while one championship is held in Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagoya, Tokyo hosts three championships annually.

Mostly people think that sumo wrestling is just about two fat guys trying to push each other; they are absolutely wrong, sumo is much more than that. Sumo is a sport which tests a person's agility, technique, astuteness, speed and also weight. That is why the sight of a sumo defeating an opponent weighing much more than him is very common.

Capital city Tokyo plays host to Grand Sumo Tournament thrice a year in January, May and September. The tournament begins on a Sunday and on the fifteenth day, ends on a Sunday too. In Tokyo, the championship is held at the Grand Sumo Stadium Kokugikan. Kkokugian is located in Ryogoku. The tournament commences AT 10:00 a m with competitions between inexperienced wrestlers; matches between experienced wrestlers follow later and by 04:00 pm, the star wrestlers appear. The real action starts from 04:00pm and lasts for another couple of hours. The day's competition ends with a bout between the highest ranking sumo the yokozuna and a challenger. The inexperienced sumo wrestlers take part in the bouts with the aim of getting the most wins. The greater the number of wins ensures a place in the next competition. For this reason the junior wrestlers compete every other day that is seven times while the top most wrestlers participate only once in the competition.Sumo tournaments and locations
