Stylish Dressing For A Winter Wedding Can Be A Challenge

Stylish Dressing For A Winter Wedding Can Be A Challenge

It can be complicated enough to organise the colour themes and styles for bride

, bridesmaids, groom, best man and ushers for a summer wedding but it can be even more difficult when planning a winter wedding when skies are grey and the weather may be cold, windy or even snowing.

Obviously, heavier fabrics may be needed and these can be more difficult to source, not to mention to sew.

The first consideration is where the wedding is set. It may be held under cover, where there is adequate heating but guests and wedding party will not be able to avoid the outside altogether. It is therefore best to avoid anything that will get caught in the wind - and also high heeled or stilletto shoes that can sink into damp ground.

Heavier fabrics need to be chosen with care when trying to outfit a variety of people of different sizes and shapes, but the one thing that a winter wedding makes possible is the opportunity to go for colour rather than plain white for the bride.

With a seasonal autumn or winter theme there is the opportunity for warm, rich, burgundy, wine, or russet colours and perhaps for choosing a heavier weight satin or brocade.

One option is to team a long, silk or satin dress in an ivory, cream or champagne colour with an elegant cloak or coat with a hood that can be trimmed with fur - or, for those concerned about animal welfare, fake fur. The coat could be made in a contrasting colour - even a deep red to reflect the season if the wedding is near Christmas.

For the bridesmaids consider fake fur boleros or shrugs, coats or capes. Trimmings, embroidery or accessories in silver are often a good embellishment for winter wedding clothes.

For brides who want something a bit different it may be better to go to a specialist in wedding dress alterations for an initial consultation about whether to try to find what they have from a ready-made selection or have something specially made.

She may already have found a dress that she loves but found that it does not fit exactly right and an expert in bridal alterations will be able to take care of the details as well as offering advice on accessories and also achieve a special look by making an appropriate long coat or cloak to enhance the outfit and keep the wearer warm.

Most weddings may be held in spring or summer but a winter wedding may be the perfect opportunity to do something a little bit different.
