Bengali wedding customs can typically be divided into three phases. pre-wedding, wedding and post wedding.
Bengali pre-wedding rituals are extremely delightful to experience. The enthusiasm for the upcoming joyous occasion shines through the people's attitudes and activities. These rituals include Adan Pradan', Ashirwad (Patri Patra)', Vridhi Puja', Dodhi Mangal', Wedding Piris', Gae Halud Tattva', Adhibas Tattva', Snan', and Sankha Porana', each of which further enriches the overall festivity.
The Bengali wedding rituals comprise of the practices such as the traditional welcome of the groom with the baran dala' in the hands of the bride's mother. In this custom, the plate is lifted to touch the forehead of the groom and then lowered to the ground. Thereafter, it is again touched to the forehead of the groom. He is then welcomed in the bride's house with sweets. This practice is followed by Shubho Drishti' ceremony wherein the face of the Bengali bride is revealed to the groom after she takes seven rounds around him. Mala Badal ritual is then followed in which the couple exchanges garlands along with the chanting of mantras by the purohit.
Saat Paak and Sampradhan rituals are then practiced wherein a wooden stool which is called pidi' is presented to the bride for her to sit on. The bride's brother then lifts the pidi, after which the bride's maternal or paternal uncle hands her away to the groom's family. This custom is called sampradhan'.
Thereafter, the Bengali groom recites mantras in tune with the priest's recitations. The bride is made to take seven circles around the groom. This ritual symbolizes the sacred union of the couple.
The post wedding rituals such as Basar Ghar', Bashi Biye' , Bou Baran', Bharan Poshan and Bahubhaat', Kaal Ratri', Dira Gaman' and Phool Shojja' further amplify the grandeur of the Bengali wedding.
Wedding is thus an occasion for the Bengalis to exhibit the magnanimous and exuberant customs of their community. Upholding the grandiose of their heritage, Bengali weddings embellish their rich culture even further.
