Struggling Teens In Western Society
Some believe that most of the teens today are struggling teens
. That is a big generalization that needs to be examined from the perspective of the believer. Having gone through those troubling teenage years, we know from experience that there are issues and challenges to be confronted. But are things so severe to declare them a crisis?If one were to watch the news and use that as the only source of information, it is understandable how one's opinion can be skewed this way. The daily news is about sensationalism and tragedy. No one wants to hear who won the National Spelling Bee (parents and grandparents excluded.) since it is more newsworthy to talk about gang violence.
This is not to say that there are not struggling teens out there that have to worry about drugs, sex, abusive parents and how to still maintain good grades. There are there. And they are coping with what their lives have presented to them. However these issues are not unique to teenagers.
Certain issues will originate based on where someone calls home. Gang violence and open drug sales are not likely to be present in the wealthy suburbs. However, regardless of the issues they are apparent in the adult lives, as well. It really is not accurate to say that this is proof of struggling teens.
Many parents want to send their children to boot camps, military schools and other institutions to help these teens that are struggling so unsuccessfully. However, the parents might first want to look at how they have handled these exact same sets of issues. No one is trying to point the finger at the parents right away either.
Also, does a child have all the information that they need to cope in an ever-changing world? Many parents do not want to talk about these things out of fear of temptation. Ignorance is anything but bliss. If a child does not get their information from a parent, they will have plenty of friends that will be willing to tell them. In order for a person to navigate the world they need all the tools that can be afforded to them.
Not talking about these issues and hoping that the kids will not encounter these types of problems is not arming them with the tools that they need to make the right decisions. Just because a majority of teens may struggle with in area of life does not mean that every teenager will struggle in that area of life.
It is not advisable to go with the majority is doing. Every child is different and what works for one, will not work for another. Perhaps it is time that we, as a society, that start really looking at those teenagers that we believe to be succeeding and finding out what it is that they do.
To see things from one perspective does not allow anyone to see around a corner to a different view. Look at every teenager instead looking at them as a statistical group.
It is not inconceivable to consider every child. If the task starts at home and works its way out from there, it can work. The issues of drug abuse, sexual abuse and bullying will always be there. However of there is an understanding about every child, it will easier to manage if they go astray. Struggling teens should not be forced to face their challenges alone and misunderstood.
