South African Hoodia Gordonii Can It Be Found In Other Parts Of The World

?

The South African Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent plant that is sometime incorrectly named the African Hoodia cactus. When in fact the Hoodia belongs to the Genus-Trichocaulon; family-Asclepiadaceae while the cactus is from the family Cactaceae. Resembling the cactus, it has spikes and can grow more than 6 feet tall. It also has water-storing flesh that acts as water storages. The difference of a Hoodia Gordonii from a cactus is its smell. It smells like rotten meat, has flies to pollinate and is bitter in taste too. What really separates it from the other plants is its appetite suppressing capabilities.

The San Bushmen of South Africa has been using the Hoodia for centuries to suppress their appetite in order for them to endure week long hunting trips. It seemed impractical for the hunting party to bring sufficient amount of food since they were not sure how long the hunt would last. By coming across the Hoodia Gordonii in certain parts of the Kalahari Desert they eliminate the hunger and thirst plus they feel energized by eating the heart of the plant.

The South African Hoodia Gordonii was made discovered by the outside world in the 60's when a study was conducted on the indigenous food consumption of the Bushmen. When they came across the Hoodia they were amazed by how much weight the lab animals lost. They successfully isolated the molecule responsible for the appetite suppression in the 90's for hopes of synthetically producing the molecule at lesser costs but failed to do so. The only option left was to farm it and isolate the molecule in the lab. But there are only a few companies that are legally allowed to export the Hoodia and they must have the CITES permit to do so.

Can the Hoodia Gordonii be grown in other parts of the world with similar topography and weather? There were attempts to grow the Hoodia Gordonii in the USA, China and Mexico but were proved futile. If ever it grew in these parts of the world the Hoodia did not possess the same appetite suppressing characteristics as the one that grew in the Kalahari Desert. There are also over 20 species of the Hoodia but there is only one Hoodia Gordonii and it grows in the deserts of South Africa. So if a company claims that their products contain 100% Hoodia it must be the South African Hoodia Gordonii otherwise it will be ineffective.
