North Stradbroke Island - Your Australian Island Destination!
Stradbroke Island, just off the South East Queensland coast of Australia, is the second largest sand island in the world (the largest sand island in the world being Fraser Island just a little further up the coast!). More affectionately known as 'Straddie' this sand island is 38km long and 12km across at its widest point. Now, when I tell you that this island has a massive(!) population of about 2,000 people you just know that it is the place to go to when you want to get away from it all!
Rich in Flora and Fauna
Stradbroke Island is a rich and diverse natural environment that includes coral reefs, rocky shorelines, pristine beaches and seagrass beds rich in marine wildlife. This sand island also features an inland freshwater lake that is perfect for cooling off in!
Whale Watching at its Best!
Australia is blessed in that every year more and more whales migrate up and down the east coast and Stradbroke Island is the perfect place to watch them! From May each year, Humpback whales can be seen heading north to warmer waters. From July, the Humpbacks are joined by Southern Right Whales also heading north. Come August the whole cycle begins again as the whales head south to the Antarctic!
During a trip to Stradbroke you are also likely to see dolphins, turtles and a host of migratory and native birds! Stradbroke is a nature lovers' paradise!
Plenty of Accommodation and Dining Options
Whilst the permanent population of North Stradbroke is only about 2,000 people, there are plenty of places to stay whilst visiting the island. By far the most accommodation available on the island are house rentals, with a number of top class resorts and hotels also located on the island.
Easily Accessible
You would be forgiven for thinking that such a beautiful, unspoilt island would be remote and difficult to get to. Not Stradbroke, for she is located just a short ferry ride from Brisbane, the State Capital of Queensland! Indeed, this island is a perfect destination for a day trip with the family; catch the early morning ferry, spend the day immersed in the scenic splendour of Stradbroke, and return home later that same day ready to spend the evening dining at one of Brisbane's world class restaurants on the Brisbane river!
