Songs Teach Children Curriculum Concepts
Remember learning the states of the US or the capitals of those states to music in elementary school
? Bet you can still sing that little song to this day, word for word, to the amazement of many friends and family members! Educators and parents of today are using music to help their little children learn concepts from shapes and colors to math facts and planets of our solar system.The common use of piggyback songs has gained in popularity as we return to the basics of teaching our young children. When you piggyback a song you simply take a familiar melody of a children song such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star or Skip to My Lou and put in new lyrics. Many recording artists for the preschool set have helped these little ones learn addition, multiplication, world languages and spelling! And a welcoming audience these children are. Soaking up the new concepts like sponges while their brains are what many people refer to as plastic in texture.
Homeschooling families, classroom teachers and involved parents realize that there are many ways to help their children get ahead in what has become a very global economy. Our ever shrinking world is full of diversity, and the better armed a student is during his academic journey to take on this diversity, the more successful he will be in his future. Parents were even encouraged by President Obama during his campaign in the fall of 2008 to make certain their children learned to speak Spanish.
The new administration leading the United States into this global economy and beyond is focused on early childhood education, realizing that we rank 34th in Primary Education when ranked among other countries around the world. Arne Duncan, head of the United States Department of Education, has a team of professionals determined to improve our ranking and provide our young children with a better jump start into their word of academia.
Encourage yourselves, the teachers of your young children, and those directly involved with the academic learning of your children to use music daily and in conjunction with lessons. There is a lot of truth to the addition problem of adding rhyme, rhythm and repetition to equal the sum of remembering! Not to mention the use of music during these challenging economic times help level the day of everyone in the home or the classroom.
Music is a universal language that transcends all people, all cultures. The future of our United States relies upon the use of music to teach curriculum concepts that will carry this generation of future leaders into a very global economy. Arm them with multiple languages, science expertise, problem solving skills above all others and early reading prowess. It is easy to witness the power of music in teaching as you watch a four year old sing the days of the week in his native language of English right alongside his new language of Spanish.
