Solving Your Dog's Chewing Probelm
Do you find yourself constantly yelling at your dog for chewing on objects around the house that theyre not supposed to be chewing on
, like your shoes, or the dining room table, or the corner of your rocking chair? Its not uncommon for dogs to go through that terrible phase of their adolescence where they have to chew on just about everything they see.You can help discourage this act by first taking those objects out of reach of your puppy so as to let them know that they cant have them and theyll have to find something else to play with like a tough, chewable dog toy. Always remember to give them the acceptable chew toy whenever you see them begin to chew on an object that is not intended to be chewed on. This will help take their attention off of the object that you dont want them to chew on. Other great items that your dog can chew on are rawhide bones, chew treats, or pet safe rubber toys.
At this point it is important to remember to be consistent. Youve begun the routine of taking away the items that your dog cant have, and giving him acceptable chew toys. Stick with it and dont give up. When your dog attempts to chew on something that is not supposed to be chewed on, dont be afraid to speak up. A good stern No is a great way to let your puppy know that their actions are not acceptable. Be confident when speaking to your puppy and speak loudly. Its important that you show your dominance over them in order to be affective when disciplining them.
There are other training aids available that are intended to help you in the process of stopping your puppys bad chewing habits. Chew-stop sprays can be used to prevent puppies from chewing on objects that are not intended to be chewed on. Chew-stop sprays contain a liquid that leaves a bitter taste in the puppys mouth when the puppy licks or chews an object to which the spray has been applied. Dogs hate the bitter taste and they will avoid the object that gave them the bitter taste. As with any training method, this process is not 100% certain, but has been proven to be very effective, and takes time and repetition.
Training your puppy not to chew on certain things can be frustrating as it takes time and effort to properly discipline your puppy and teach them the proper behavior. Stick with it and dont give up. Your consistency and hard work will pay off in the end when you have a well behaved, obedient companion. Remember, a few slip-ups now and then is OK. Its important not to bring attention to those slip-ups, but rather, bring attention to the proper behavior. Follow these few simple steps and youll be well on your way to being successful at training your puppy.
