Rule 1: Do not commit to making a payment even for a very small amount because then you will be held against it. If you make a commitment and there is an agreement between you and debt collector then it should be in writing.

Rule 2: Do not lid to debt collectors though they lie a lot. At some point you might be caught and may be held against for that lie. It is best to speak truth to avoid any future consequences.

Rule 3: Do not get intimidated by the way debt collectors speak with you. Keep calm and don't get bullied by them. You have definite rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) that protect you from debt collection harassment.

Rule 4: Be extremely practical while committing on an amount of payment. Do not go over board while committing to an amount. Make sure you agree to an amount that you can afford to pay.

Rule 5: If the debt does exist, do not pretend as if the debts do not exist. Debt collectors anyway, will be behind you for payment. But, you should get the debt validated as well as get the original bills.

Rule 6: Do not give any bank details as a commitment of the amount you have to pay. No matter what the collectors say to get the details, do not commit on them because you never know when the money is completely swiped off your account.

Although each situation in debt collection harassment is unique and the way you may be able to handle also is different, an understanding of your rights under the FDCPA as well as a point point plan of dealing them is the best way to come out of the struggle.
