Six Ways To Make Filing Your Taxes Easier

Getting all of your paperwork in order for tax season doesn't have to be a hassle. The Internal Revenue Service has these six suggestions that should make preparing your taxes a simple matter this season.

1. Don't wait. Instead of ignoring your tax issues until right before the due date, prepare your tax documents as soon as you have all necessary information. Getting done right away means you won't have to rush and miss possible savings, not to mention increasing your chances of accuracy.

2. Go to the source. Don't ignore the valuable resources available at the IRS website www.irs.gov. A valuable place to get the answers to any questions you might have is on the irs website at 1040 Central.

3. Take advantage of Free File. This valuable service can be found at irs.gov, including is an option to prepare and e-file your tax return for free. Anyone who earned $58,000 or less qualifies to use this free tax software provided in partnership with the creators. Go to www.irs.gov, and search for "free file" at the homepage to learn more.

4. E-file. The most common, safest and easiest way to file your taxes is now online through IRS e-file. As of last year, 70% of all individuals filing their tax returns (that's 99 million taxpayers!) filed with IRS e-file. This year, many accountants and other preparers will actually be mandated to offer e-filing, and will be able to explain how it works to you. You can e-file now, and pay later if you owe on your taxes, and if you e-file and choose the direct deposit option, you will receive your refund in as little as 10 days.

5. Don't Procrastinate because you Can't Pay. If you do owe on your taxes but know you will be unable to pay by the April tax deadline, file your return on time anyway. Pay what you can right away, and contact the IRS immediately to hear your options. Call 800-829-1040 to find out if you can get some relief or reach a payment plan agreement. If you are eligible, an installment agreement can also be requested online at irs.gov, simply search for "online payment agreement."

6. Get an Extension. If you have put off filing, still do not avoid making the payments on the taxes you will owe. If 90% of the tax due is not paid by the deadline, there may be a penalty fee assessed. Use Form 4868 to file for an extension. This form can also be found through Free File. Make the estimated payments on time anyway. You can also call 800-TAX-FORM to have the correct paperwork mailed to your home.
