?Babies grow quickly and usually are out of a crib around age 2, but really aren't big enough for a big bed. Maybe you buy a toddler bed, which might last until 5 years of age. Then you buy a regular bed which hopefully will make it for a while. But still, you've bought 3 beds in 5 years and they are not cheap. In addition, some children do not want to give up the crib; they feel secure and comfortable in their bed. Manufacturers understand this and now beds are available that go from crib, to toddler bed, to full size bed.
In beds that grow with your child, the crib becomes a toddler bed by removing one side, leaving three sides intact. The mattress is at the lowest level so the toddler can get in and out of the bed easily. This helps transition your child to a bed with no sides while also allowing him or her to stay where it is most secure. Later, the sides of the crib are used as head and foot boards for a full sized bed when your child is ready. Removable side rails may be necessary depending on your child. This bed can take your child all the way to young adulthood.
Convertible cribs often cost more than a regular crib, but because you don't buy a whole new bed later, it may be worth it. Remember though that when the bed is converted to a full sized bed a new mattress is required and possibly other things to convert it to a full bed. Know before you choose what is required to convert the bed to a toddler bed and then a full bed.
As with any crib or purchase for baby you should make sure it meets safety standards, including non-toxic finishes, tip restraints and no sharp edges.
