Should Men Wear Leggings?
Since leggings came to the forefront of fashion in the 1980s
, they have traditionally been seen as a womens clothing item worn for different occasions; however men have also been known to wear them in recent years and it was in fact men who first started wearing them in the 14th Century when they were first introduced. So if men first started the trend, then why is there so much controversy surrounding males wearing them now?In the 14th Century this type of leg wear was worn as two separate pieces, one for each leg, then laced up and worn only by men; this continued for a good few centuries with the leg wear developing to be worn by knights in chain mail and others in leather. From this stage leggings spread globally and started being worn by women in the 19th Century. So it was about 400 years that men were wearing the style before it became acceptable for women and they took note of the garment. The leg wear was also worn in the military by soldiers for some time as they kept dirt out of the shoes; these had a slightly different design but were still classed as leggings with stirrups and were very practical for wearing as a base layer.
It was later in the 1960s that they were first sold and manufactured as a single piece (more like the style we know today) and this was when the popularity of them switched over and fashion changed. In the 1980s, the leggings craze really took off and women everywhere were wearing the gym-style leg wear which was now a major fashion item. Women wore them as trousers in all sorts of bright colours in Spandex and similar materials, which is nothing like what they are today. This popularity continued until the mid nineties when the fad grew old. When leggings had a fashion revival in the mid-noughties, this was when it became fashionable for men to also try the trend.
In 2007, several designers such as Gucci and Roberto Cavalli featured male leggings or meggings in their collections and attempted to make it the latest thing in male fashion, however the trend was widely criticised and was too farfetched for many men to accept. Comedian Russell Brand made it his signature look to sport a pair of womens leggings on stage at this time saying they were so comfortable; comedian Noel Fielding has also been known to wear a pair as a step further from skinny jeans.
Men have been known to wear the leg wear for sport such as running and cycling and also for warmth, wearing them as an under layer for activities such as hiking and snow sports; this is seen as socially acceptable today as they are a practical and comfortable form of leg wear however it has not yet become a standard fashion item for men. Despite introducing the leg wear and wearing them for a longer time period than women ever have, it doesnt seem that the cycle has come back around yet for men to wear leggings as part of their everyday wardrobe. With a recent mens hosiery collection from Emilio Cavallini, perhaps this will be more widely accepted?
