Should Children Suffer The Natural Consequences Of Failure
Parents the world over have a fear of their child failing, especially at school. They feel that once a failure, at anything, always a failure. But if a fail grade is the natural consequences of the effort and behavior they have given to that subject, they should learn from the discomfort that they feel.
A lot of parents do not accept this easily, and attempt to persuade the school to change the grade. If they fight to get the grade improved and succeed, then the all that the child learns is that they have no need to take responsibility for their actions. They will not learn anything about responsibility, nor are their marks in their failed subject going to improve. But they will learn that if they make a mess of something it will be sorted out for them.
Another thing that they will believe, is that problems can be solved using power, so in their minds power replaces responsibility. It would be better for them to learn that dealing with their own problems shows more responsibility. They have got to learn that power emanates from responsibility, not that manipulation and threats are the most powerful weapons to use against failure.
Unfortunately most parents find it for easier to change the grade, than to accept child's failings. But in the majority of cases the reason they failed is that they did not do their schoolwork and lied their way out of it, so they must take the consequences, that, in this scenario is failure. Failure is very rarely fatal, it is a lesson with a problem that only they have the responsibility to solve.
If they fail in a subject, it offers an opportunity for them to take a close look at why, and what they did wrong, and how they can do better. But parents do not want to see their prodigy's as failures, so they take the burden upon themselves and wonder where they have gone wrong, and what they can do, but really it is the child who must ask themselves that.
So why must you allow your child to feel the consequences of their of their actions, such as worry, fear and disappointment. Well, if a child feels upset, frustrated, angry or sad about something, they normally learn the skills needed to cope with it, and they learn to stop this type of thing happening again. Such as doing the work to stop them failing a second time.
Discomfort follows us everywhere, from a crowded bus to a rejection letter. Everyone experiences something that will make them feel uncomfortable, so it is better that it is a lesson that is learned early in life, and then it can be managed better and tolerated more. And it is going to be a very frustrating life if that lesson is never understood.
So when you see them getting frustrated by something, don't jump in and sort it out for them, show them how to solve the problem. If you continue to protect them against failure they will never now how to cope with unpleasantness when you are not around. The lesson that they would have got from you is that the only way to confront failure and discomfort is with the power of manipulation, and not with an air of responsibility.
