Seattle Seahawks Tickets - Seahawks Shine In 2010 Nfl Draft
The Seattle Seahawks had a disappointing 2009 season
, finishing third in the NFC West with a record of 5-11. Like other teams in a slump, the Seahawks attacked the problem from multiple fronts. One of the major ways is adding new talent. The days of disappointment may soon be a distant memory for the Seahawks considering their success at the 2010 NFL Draft. With their selections, they surpassed the other teams in the NFC West to earn top marks.
Prior to the draft, the Seahawks added a bulldog of a recruiter in new head coach Pete Carroll. Previously the head coach at USC, Carroll has a reputation as a tough coach who knows what it takes to pick winners. He did just that with the help of general manager John Schneider in the 2010 NFL Draft, earning draft grades as high as an A+ from analysts.
Their offensive line immediately improved with the selection of Oklahoma State offensive tackle Russell Okung in the first round (sixth overall pick). He is expected to start at left tackle and provide exceptional blocking for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on his blind side. The team picked up a second first-round pick from the Broncos and used it on Texas strong safety Earl Thomas (14th overall pick). Thomas has the potential to be a playmaker on defense, keeping opponents from high-yardage plays.
In the second round, the Seahawks expanded upon their success in the first round, picking up Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate with the 60th overall pick. As his name suggests, Tate could be the team's "golden boy" at the wide receiver position, adding a talented target for Hasselbeck despite his height (5'11"). After skipping the third round because of trades, they had two picks in the fourth round, taking Oregon cornerback Walter Thurmond (111th overall pick) and North Carolina defensive end E.J. Wilson. (127th overall pick). Both have the potential to work their way to starting positions.
In the later rounds, the Seahawks added Virginia Tech free safety Kam Chancellor (Round 5), Southern California tight end Anthony McCoy (Round 6), Arizona State defensive end Dexter Davis (Round 7) and Kent State wide receiver Jameson Konz (Round 7). If they want to take the NFC West in 2010, the Seahawks will want to look out for the San Francisco 49ers, who also earned high marks with their selections. Like the Seahawks, the Niners had two picks in the first round, picking up Rutgers offensive tackle Anthony Davis and Idaho guard Mike Iupati. They also added a defensive threat with their second round pick, Southern California free safety Taylor Mays.
Although they lost talent this offseason, the Arizona Cardinals could still be a threat this year with their first round selection, Tennessee defensive tackle Dan Williams, and second round selection, TCU linebacker Daryl Washington. The St. Louis Rams have a long way to go, but they took a step in the right direction with their first round selection (and first overall pick), Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.
