The comfort fit is achieved with 3D fit padding to cradle and support the foot, with heel foam to cushion the heel strike for comfort even on hard packed surfaces, and to deal with the extra forces at work when tackling downhill descents at speed. Adding to the comfort, an anatomically moulded EVA footbed is soft and spongy underfoot, with a more robust EVA moulded midsole to cushion the whole foot on long walks and hikes over challenging terrain. For added protection, a rubber and leather toe cap reinforces the toe - a common site of abrasions - with a rubber heel cap to protect the rear foot adding to the lifespan of the shoes.
The Elios 2 is designed to go anywhere, and features the Salomon Contragrip sole. Salomon use a multi-sport tread pattern designed to maximise speed over the full range of surfaces, with a highly durable yet sticky rubber compound for a long lifespan and excellent traction on mud, loose gravel, uneven trails as well as hard urban surfaces. To cope with all weather conditions, the Salomon Elios 2 is sold as a super lightweight shoe for spring through to summer, or as a GTX model with the GORE-TEX Extended Comfort Footwear system and a gusseted tongue for a 100% waterproof seal. In both models the breathability is maintained with a mesh upper which promotes air flow and the escape of moisture, without compromising the weatherproofing. For extra waterproofing, the uppers are constructed from oiled nubuck, for a sleek and stylish hydrophobic exterior, with robust leather used in the non-waterproof models.
