Sick of going on holidays to the same boring destination? Tired of visiting the same locations as everyone else you know? Want to get out and about and really explore the world and what it has to offer? One of the best holidays you can go on is a round-the-world trip, and you'd be amazed at how affordable this sort of vacation can actually be - particularly because around-the-world flights can actually be cheaper than many of the shorter-distance options. Round-the-World vacations have long been popular with the recently graduated, for those on a gap year, and even for young couples. This trend has spread to other demographics, however, and it is now a popular holiday choice for retirees, honeymooners, tour groups and families. The reason for this increase in interest is that around the world airfares have proven to be an economical option for holidaymakers, particularly if there is more than one planned stop on the itinerary. In this day and age of credit crunches, unstable economies and weakening financial markets it's important to get value for money, and so it is unsurprising that these cheap flights are snapped up quickly.
A great way to spend the summer holidays is to go globe-trotting. Because of the way around the world tickets are structured it is possible to make any number of stops - generally the airline will cap the cost of the ticket so that several stop-overs can be made (within reason!). The usual method of capping the stops and flights covered by the ticket is by monitoring the accumulation of air-miles - most airlines will offer tickets which cover 30,000, 50,000, or even 75,000 miles of travel. As the round-the-world tickets are usually limited to travel within a certain period you may be limited to the amount of time you can spend in each destination, so it is important that you check this with your airline or travel agent before you confirm your accommodation bookings.
Most holiday-makers who choose to use the around-the-world ticketing option start out from the U.K. and head west to the United States, perhaps landing first in New York and then flying to Los Angeles (U.S.), Vancouver (Canada) or Hawaii (U.S.). After spending a few days or weeks in these destinations or any others within the North American continent the next port of call is generally somewhere in Asia. Japan, Hong Kong, Seoul and Beijing are all incredibly popular, and can be a fantastic way to take in a big of the exotic 'Far East'. The next stop on most round-the-world holidaymakers itineraries is Australia, New Zealand or one of the South Pacific Islands (such as Fiji or Vanuatu). From here it is possible to fly up to India or across to South Africa, or even direct to the Middle East (Dubai and Egypt are popular). Depending on the amount of air-miles you have left you may also be able to stop off in a number of European locations, before finally ending up back where you started in the United Kingdom.
