The Australian state of Tasmania is home to the historical town of Ross which is 76 meters above sea level. It is located 117 km to the north of Hobart, and 78 km to the south of Launceston. In 1807, a European surveyor, Charles Grimes, discovered the region while traveling through Tasmania's central valley.
Tasmania is famous for its many 19th Century historical colonial towns, but Ross is arguably the most striking. Therefore, it attracts many tourists although it has not succumbed to the effects of modern tourism. The large highway linking Launceston and Hobart bypasses the town which enhances its peaceful ambiance.

One of the town's landmark features is the old stone bridge that prisoners built in 1836. It is still standing strong and belongs to an elite group of Australia's three oldest bridges. Prisoners also built the other two, but Ross Bridge is considered to be the most significant. The team of builders included two incarcerated professional stonemasons.
A protected area for birds, swans, and ducks lies on one side of the bridge, while the other side is a fishing area. Here, you can enjoy the peace while trying to catch elusive trout. Somercot's Cottage is another popular attraction just outside the town. Captain Samuel Horton built it in 1840 and its notable features are a cobble courtyard and a spectacular 20 paned French window.
There are lots of interesting things to see in Church Street. Twenty-two of the town's 40 historic buildings are found in this area Take a step into the past and enjoy a leisurely walk along the street, starting at the Uniting Church. On the way back, stop in at the many specialty shops that offer antiques, crafts, jewelry, china, furniture, pottery, and other collectibles.
St John's Church is a splendid example of colonial architecture. Also located in Church Street, it was constructed in 1868 and is home to a 100 year-old organ that still works. Other noteworthy features of the church are its unique stone pulpit, an oak lectern, and striking stained glass windows.
Yet another interesting Church Street attraction is the Tasmanian Wool Center which manufactures high quality products made with wool produced in the area. The center has a Wool Exhibition with many displays of superfine wool materials, wool samples, and clothing. There is also a gift shop where you can browse through a range of Tasmanian crafts, blankets, wool, and garments.
