Review of The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer is the 16th best selling novel by acclaimed author Michael Connelly. Its successful transition to the big screen is certainly enhanced by the strong performances from the two leading men - Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Phillippe. The former especially puts in an exceptional performance and this will go a long way towards him finally being recognized as a serious actor.

He plays Mick Haller, a lawyer who specializes in helping the underbelly of LA drug dealers, prostitutes etc. Operating from his Lincoln Continental, he cruises between court houses finding loopholes in the law to get his shady clients released. Haller is charismatic, slick and seems to be pretty one dimensional. His greasy charm fits in well with the style of his dubious clientele.

You should never judge a book by its cover, and this definitely applies to Haller. As the intriguing story unfolds, so does his true personality. He is far from the deadbeat he appears to be, and chooses to help the unfortunate rather than having to. His devotion as a Father becomes apparent as does his life long fear of letting an innocent man end up in jail. Marisa Tomei gives her usual stoic performance as his ex wife, a criminal prosecutor.

The biggest case of his life is brought to him through a bail bondsman, played by John Leguizamo. Loius Roulet, a socialite from Beverly Hills, is arrested on charges of the attempting to rape and then murdering a prostitute. The film could well have fallen apart here, but the casting of Phillippe to act as McConaughey's foil is inspired. Nothing is what is seems in this case, and as he delves deeper Haller makes many discoveries.

The most important one is the realization he is having a duel with a mastermind, and they may have led him to jailing an innocent man. Thus making his worst nightmare a reality. How Haller balances his morals and ethics against the judicial system to correct the mistake makes for excellent viewing.

This complex and entertaining film really keeps you on the edge of your seats, a feat not often accomplished in modern film making.

McConaughey is simply outstanding as Haller, you could almost believe the part had been written for him. He handles the movement between drama and comedy with aplomb, and the scenes between Haller and Roulet are some of the most intense and spellbinding you will witness on the big screen. The strong supporting cast including Josh Lucas and William H Macy all give excellent performances. This is one occasion when a stellar ensemble actually connect and impress.

With one exception,. McConaughey also keeps his shirt on throughout the film. It is his past penchant for disrobing that has prevented him from receiving the parts, and the acclaim, he richly deserves. A fine actor in a good part in an excellent movie. Nobody should be disappointed by the Lincoln Lawyer, and many will be surprised by the leads acting prowess.
