This is a program that would work well for any type of teen. The teens that have a strong sense of who they are and what they want could be great examples for teens who are more confused about life. Those who are encouraged by others of their age are less unsure and more certain of themselves. This helps their self-confidence to grow and therefore encourages them to stand up for what they believe. Teenagers are usually starved for self-confidence. Another great reason to look into teen mentoring is self-esteem. Self-esteem and self-confidence are two very different things. Esteem has to do with the view of one's worth to themselves. Confidence, while important, is not even as important as esteem. A teen with good self-esteem will respect themselves and therefore be more likely to make respectful choices in the situations they find themselves involved in.
Research provides another fantastic reason teens should become involved with teen mentoring. Research has shown that teens that have a higher opinion of themselves with greater self-confidence are far less likely to participate in harmful activities such as smoking, depression and other addictions. With the rate of teen smoking on the rise, it's especially important to educate a teen to the dangers of this activity in a way that he or she will listen. More often than not, an adult cannot get through to a teen on issues such as this. Teen to teen, though, is a far more successful method of spreading good advice and positive reinforcement.
Something else that's very beneficial for a teen through a teen mentoring program is being in a safe place at all times. Parents always want to know where their children are and what they are doing. It's difficult to keep track of an unruly teen. Knowing that they are out with another teen mentor will help to set parents at rest and assure the safety of the teen in question.
