Magnetic Layout:
The first significant new feature in Sibelius 6 is magnetic layout. One problem in creating professional, print worthy, or often even readable scores is collisions of notes and markings. Magnetic layout automatically detects neighboring objects (notes, dynamic markings, etc) and adjusts the spacing between them, and within bars and staves to accommodate clean separations. Spacing can be set, and magnetic layout can be turned on or off at a global, or even event level, in case you want one object to remain where it is regardless. This is a great feature that works very well, and may be worth the upgrade price alone for many existing Sibelius users.
Versions:
Sibelius 6 allows you to save versions of a score for quick comparison. You could do something similar by just saving to new filenames, but this feature integrates versions into the file log for easy selection of versions, a section to save notes on each version, and quick opening of various versions for editing, printing, etc. There is a Compare feature that will open versions side by side in separate windows, highlighting differences with color coded highlights. You can export these variations to a Word doc as well for reference in other scores, for example. "Versions" is a very handy feature to say the least.
Live Tempo:
Live tempo allows you to tap in tempo changes with your computer or midi keyboard as if you are conducting the score. Tempo input is calibrated by tapping with a click in a Calibrate window. You can then record a "live" tempo map while listening to the score. This seemed to work better from a midi keyboard than QWERTY, but that may have to do with the keyboard itself (wireless).
Sound Sets:
The included sound set, Sibelius Sounds Essentials, requires close to 2.5G of disk space and covers a wide range of instrumentation including orchestra, piano, percussion, voice (for basic vocal part reference), etc. The sounds work well enough for reference in creating a score. You won't find the realism of a larger orchestral library, for example, but it is efficient, and small enough to work on a laptop. One can of course create custom sound sets within Sibelius to access larger sample libraries (some users have provided custom sound sets check the forums/support sites for your sample library). Sibelius has an extensive mapping system to assign various instrument types and articulations.
Other new features include Rewire support; an onscreen piano keyboard and guitar fretboard; and expanded guitar and chord symbol, including input from computer or midi keyboard - play a chord, Sibelius interprets, and easy translation of standard text notation to symbol notation. I was able to enter chords for a piano/vocal piece in no time by simply playing the chords for each respective change.
